Hello to all. I have been lurking around for just over a year now. I have
enjoyed the information of so many of you and the musings of others. I live
in the Midwestern United States. I resigned from teaching middle school
band three years ago to take care of my son (now 8) and my two daughters (17
months apart). I carry a private studio of 21 students...the vast majority
of which are clarinet players. I play some saxophone and much to the dismay
of my clarinet players, purchased an alto last spring. (They think I am a
traitor.)

I was wondering if any of you have been experiencing cracking Buffet
clarinets. It seems as though we have had a rash of this lately. Our top
three clarinet players and gotten 5 cracks (amongst them all) since last
December. Our top player had a crack in January and we think we found
another Monday. Our second player had two cracks in December. Our third
chair player stopped at my house yesterday to confirm what she already knew
was a crack. I was starting to wonder if it was something I was telling
them except the gal who is second chair studies with another teacher. They
are all very conscientious gals who take great care of their horns. This
has been mind-boggling to have so many cracks in such a short amount of
time. All of the horns are Buffet R-13 with one being an RC. Is this a
problem we are just having here or has anyone else experienced such a thing?

One other question. I know there are many publishers out there and have
purchased from many. I am compiling a list of materials for a student. She
would also like me to include publishers. Is there a particular publisher
that anyone has a preference to? I apologize if this sounds too open and
vague. I sometimes would choose a publication for particular students due
to cost factors. I guess I am asking because I do want the best
publications of pieces. Is there one to generally use or does it really
just depend on each individual piece of music?
