I've used hydrogen peroxide (full strength for about two minutes) to clean &
revitalize oboe reeds successfully -- inside and out. I've also used an
ultrasonic cleaner for the same purpose. Both seem to remove and mildew
smell and taste and make the cane look almost new.

Interestingly, both also seem to change the playability of the reed
slightly, but always for the better. And it definitely extends the life of a
good reed. I haven't needed to try it in on clarinet reeds but I would
assume it works similarly.

I short dip in a mouthwash such as Listerine doesn't hurt either, and
removes any of the peroxide taste. Of course, then it tastes like Listerine,
which some might think is as bad or worse.
