The only way to remove the discoloration is with strong bleach. The =
chemical reaction is one of oxidation and will also oxidize the reed. =
You can kill the mildew with a solution of bleach and water (1 tsp. of =
bleach to 2 quarts of water) and soak for 10 minutes, but even that will =
only work for a half hour or so. After that, the chlorine that has been =
absorbed into the reed will begin to oxidize the reed fibers and your =
reed will not work the way you want it to. Drying out the reed after =
treatment won't help either, as chlorine remains present until weakened =
(usually with sodium carbonate).
