Walter,

My only comment would be that if I had to force a barrel, I wouldn't =
attempt to put the instrument together in the first place. People need =
to use a little common sense. If one's finger was swollen, one wouldn't =
force a ring on it, so why force a barrel or swollen joints of any sort. =
I also swab while playing to keep the moisture level down while =
playing. I play on rosewood which absorbs everything and I have never =
had swelling problems. I have had binding of keys from dryness, but =
that has leveled itself out over time. I have been making my own cork =
grease lately out of lanolin and coconut oil (it smells heavenly), with =
a touch of beeswax to thicken it up. When I grease the corks, I always =
rub some into the wood at the joints on the inside. It helps to keep =
the moisture running down out of the instrument instead of letting it =
pool. My tenons also fit quite well and I seldom get water between them =
- usually only after I have let the instruments stand while put =
together. Generally, if they have to sit longer than 15 - 20 minutes, I =
take them apart.
