When Larry McDonald recorded the Mozart Concerto on a basset clarinet (1985?)
he would drive everyone in the building nuts from his practicing because the
tuning was so flat compared to our modern A440. He used an instrument built
by a European maker named Tutz.
I'm no expert on this matter, but I believe "authentic" pitch can be very
problematic, in that different towns would differ even more than they do
today on what exact pitch to use for tuning.
