Subj: [kl] Very nice piece for clarinet and violin
Date: Sat, 3 May 2003 01:41:58 -0400

Yesterday I was privileged to play in a recital of music by Shelley Foster Gurin. The recital was at Northwestern University, and it was presented in partial fulfillment of requirements for her Doctor of Music in Composition.

The piece I performed was a duet for violin and clarinet entitled "First Fruits". This piece is about 7 minutes long, in a three part form. The harmonies and melodic material is definitely "Klezmer" like, with a wonderful little slow dance in the middle section. In the final section the violin plays "serious" plaintive material reminiscent of the first section, while the clarinet, somewhat mischievously, tries to tempt the violin back to the dance. It ends quietly and serenely.

I would recommend this piece to anyone who has a violinist friend. It's a great little piece and rewards the time spent on it.

I have no idea if Shelley has it published, other than self publishing, but I bet she would love to make it available for a small fee.

Here's her e-mail address: sfgurin@-----.

This piece deserves to be played.
