Until a few years ago, i was obsessed with playing hard reeds. I was using a
van doran 2.5, and my teacher said i should be using at least a 3, and that
no good players use 2.5's. I went up to 3.5 (and ended up cutting most of
them down). As i kept playing, i got utterly obsessed with playing harder
reeds- i even swiched to Mitchell Lurie for a while-just to say i play size
5 reeds. Eventually, i just figured out i was wasting so much time cutting
down reeds and using reeds that were not my favourite (ie using mitchell
luries instead of van dorans) that i decided to play softer reeds. I now
play a vandoran v12 #3 (i have changed to a more open mouthpiece since
then). I think my playing has improved so much from getting over this. I
also had a similar obsession with ligatures, clarinets and mouthpieces etc,
and once again overcame this by thinking that if i put all my time into
practicing and not stuffing around with different ligatures and stuff, i'd
be a much better player.
cheers,
Mitch
