At the risk of bringing up ancient history, I don't recall seeing anything
conclusive about this particular question:

I have read a lot about it and I read that the clarinet was developed when
J.C. Denner added two keys to the chalumeaux. I was wondering where I could
find a diagram as to where these keys were added <snip>

I know it is probably to late for you 'Bec, but I thought this might
interest someone:

My wife (Shell) brought home some books from the library today and I noticed
"The Clarinet & Saxophone Book" by Melvin Berger in the pile. The Copyright
date is 1975, so it's almost as old as me! It does have, however, some
useful information on the history of the Clarinet that is not covered
(completely) in any other book I have. Specifically, it has (fuzzy) pictures
of the Chalumeau and Denner's Clarinet and the following text:

"...Denner lengthened the tube and widenede the inside of it. He formed the
bottom of the tube into a bell-like shape. He added another key to the
one-keyed chalumeau. This extra key covered a small new hole, high up on the
tube of the instrument."

The picture of the Chalumeau has a key on the front (looks just like the A
key).
The picture of the Clarinet (which is clearer) shows six finger holes and
the same A key on the front.

If anyone is interested, e-mail me off list and I'll scan in the photos.

Dave.
