Dear Sam,
I wrote to you initially and told you that in my opionion there
wasn't necessarily a such thing as a "jazz" mouthpiece. What I meant by
that statement is that I basically agree with Lori Lovato, who says that
it's more the reed than the mouthpiece. You just need to feel
comfortable on a mouthpiece that produces a good tone for you and then
play a reed, maybe a little bit softer than what you normally do, that
will allow you to produce a vibrato, especially in the low register, and
to bend a scoop notes. Like, for instance, being able to play the
introduction of "Rhapsody in Blue". It isn't the mouthpiece so much as
it is a good reed that is soft enough to pull off the glissando at the
beginning. When you play the melody line of a jazz tune, you want to be
happy with the tone you are producing. So you need a mouthpiece that
produces a good tone for you. ANNIE
