Karona Poindexter asks,

During a faculty recital at a Midwestern university, back in the late
1960's, the clarinet instructor came on stage with his pianist to
perform something-or-other for clarinet and piano. He played about
three notes and got three huge squeaks. He looked at his reed, said to
the audience, "Please excuse me for a moment," and walked back off
stage. In about 15 seconds, he was back on stage, making the final
adjustments to another reed and tightening the ligature, and the
performance went off without a hitch.

The performer also conducted the university's Symphonic Band. He began
the next rehearsal by asking the band, with a perfectly straight face,
"Anybody wanna buy a used clarinet reed?"

I think that the only thing I might have done differently was to ask the
recital audience the same question.
