You may have been kidding but I got close enough a few years ago--I
reattached falling-out pads to the bass with carefully folded-over duct tape.

Eventually I had to have the instrument overhauled: repadded, new springs,
the whole thing. Pricey but worth it. And the duct tape bought me some time.
