In this case, it might have been more accidental than purposeful.
In my case, both my Reply and Reply All buttons only offer
"klarinet@-----. Not all mailing lists behave
the same way in this regard. It depends on how it's set up (perhaps
also on the mail reader to some extent).
By contrast, for "orchestralist@-----.com" my Reply button
offers the private sender's address as recipient, and Reply All offers
that as recipient with a "Cc:" to the "orchestralist" group. Same mail
reading software, different e-list setup.
We went through this with the various ChoralNet lists (when I was on
their board), deciding which "automatic" Reply mode worked best for each
list. For "Choralist" it's set to Reply to the individual sender, as
the list is not meant for discussions. "ChoralTalk," however, is set to
reply to the list address, not the individual sender, because it IS
intended for discussion.
By all means we should all check the "To:" address that automatically
pops up in any reply, and replace it if warranted, before sending. But
some people may be less familiar with the fact that different lists
behave differently, and may send to the whole list by mistake rather
than malice.
