Hi Mitch,

My first thought when I saw your email, was to wonder why you didn't at
least look on the Internet for some information, but a quick search on
Google didn't really turn up any information, so I expect that you have
already tried that.

There is a bit of information, re year of composition and who the piece was
written for at
http://www.woodwind.org/Databases/Composers/Titles/006925.html

There is a mention of the duo concertante in a book called "Clarinet Solos
de Concours 1897-1980" by Harry R. Gee and published by Indiana University
Press, which I believe is now out of print, but which your library might
have a copy of. It mentions that the piece was written for the 1956 solo de
concours at the Paris Conservatoire, and that it was his last solo work for
clarinet. If you want to do some research, you could look for information
on the Paris Conservatoire and the Solos de Concours. Place the piece and
the composer in time--how old was Milhaud when he wrote the piece? What was
happening in Paris in 1956? How is this piece similar or different from
Milhaud's other compositions? What other works did he write for clarinet?
and when did he write them? Look on the title page--is it dedicated to
somebody? If so, you could briefly discuss that person in your notes as
well.

Good luck with your performance (and your programme notes).

Donella
