Ah, but are the tight outfits supposed to distract from the tone of
the 6 leger line notes or vice versa?

As far as alto clarinet solos, if memory serves, the original version
of Stravinsky's "Symphonies of Wind Instruments" has several extended
duets for alto clarinet and flute. These are rewritten for Bb clar +
fl. in the 1947 version. {interestingly, the New Grove reports a 1945
version w/o clarinets! I've never heard of this one}. Also among
Stravinsky's work, the miniature "Elegy for JFK" for Mezzo-soprano and
3 clarinets (Bb, Bb, Alto) has some wonderful alto clarinet writing.
