This is an area that has interested me a great deal. I am not so much
interested in extending the range of the clarinet as the acoustical results
of having the "B" natural at the end of the clarinet produced by a tone
hole rather than the bell. As Walter pointed out, this has proven to be a
very effective way of evening out the registral changes on the bass
clarinet. The greatest impedance to the air column is at the bell and cause
the "B" to feel much more resistant than the notes around it.

I have experimented with extensions that insert between the bell and the
end of the clarinet. So far not much luck with the Bb or A clarinets, but I
have made an excellent extension for Eb clarinet. I have been using this
for over a year in the Opera and the Symphony. Not only does it even the
registers from the throat tones to the clarion it produces a much more even
sonority through all registers. Also, because the tuning is produced from a
tone hole one can add or remove material to fine tune the "B" .

I will have several of these available at the clarinet conference in Utah.
Sam price as my barrels.
