You are of course correct, but that is a famous solo in the opera. I
was referring to ordinary accompaniment orchestral parts. Think of what
you would do if, when playing the 2nd clarinet part in Mozart's E-flat
symphony, K. 543, you suddenly came across a low D or low C. And suppose
the non solo 2nd clarinet in Beethoven's 6th symphony went down to low D.

The aria you are referring to is the famous "Parto, Parto" which has a
magnificent solo obligatto part to accomapany the character Sextus. And
the part was written for Stadler who played it in Prague on his B-flat
basset clarinet. I'm talking about the use of basset clarinets as
regular ordinary orchestral instruments.
