Actually it is not irrelevant. You make an underlying assumption that
people spell correctly at all times when in fact it is quite common for
people to spell as they speak regardless of the language. Also spelling,
along with speech, changes over time. So who is to say at this many
centuries removed, what was or was not correct, what was or was not
accepted.
