yup, all Spanish words are sexy, all Italian words are yummy sounding, all
English words are difficult to spell. :p

you're lucky I read that far down the message. Your ligature discussion
borders on Tony's not-so-interesting on-topic talk ;)

Neil,

The physics of it (ligature) is fairly complex. I think the manufacturers
love this. Leaves them more room for voodoo marketing...hahahaha.

The word ligature, in my simple way of thinking, is just a *fancy French
word for "clamp". (whether it be string or other material) The many
ligatures on the market today, "clamp" the reed down in a variety of ways.
There are so many variables involved that it is no surprise to me that so
many ligatures meet the needs of so many players.
I'm sure that a player will be able to quantify/qualify what it is that is
desirable in a particular ligature (for their needs). This is certainly an
area best left to individual players. Perhaps general trends can be
identified....like our observation that articulation is made easier by
certain brands/models. But even if we agree on the one element, other
elements of the ligature may vary from player/player, mouthpiece/mouthpiece,
clarinet/clarinet and reed/reed. Complex stuff. Interesting that we both
agreed on the BG's ability to facilitate articulation....but both have a
different idea about the color of the tone produced. A good example.
