You don't surprise me in the least.

It's a standard, ignorant (or sometimes, clever) move to choose to
interpret one particular thing (here, a post about how something written
relates to how it sounds) as an instance of something general (in your
case, 'linguistics'); and then to use your choice in order to dismiss
the whole of the general thing, meanwhile seeking to enlist the support
of others who don't happen to be acquainted with the general thing you
chose.
