I don't have my digital camera here, but I'll send a pic to anyone
interested when I get home.

Barrel: this is bent through about 30 degrees. It is made of a thin
brass liner surrounded by two turned pieces of wood, upper barrel and
lower barrel, joined extremely skilfully at the angle. I'm a pretty
competent wood and metalworker myself and I shudder at the degree of
skill required - indeed, Steve says they are very time-consuming to make
- though the liner does ease the difficulty slightly.

The angle is such that the body of the instrument is vertical when
playing. The bell is like a larger clarinet bell but with a number of
holes (about 12 holes 6 mm diameter) for resonance - not for lightening.
This shape has been used before in history.

The instrument is supported by a peg that does a double kink around the
bell. This works very well. As for the clarinet cowboy who said it must
look funny .... Dan, will you hold him while I hit him?? They look
gorgeous!

You can also make a bent bell in wood - Henrik Bok has one for his bass
- essentially by carving it in two parts and glueing together. The
serpent and some old bass clarinets were made like this.

But the Selmer has a metal crook/bell as opposed to the Fox that is all
wood?

How on earth do you make a bent barrel in wood?

Sounds like it must be pretty funny looking. Do you have a picture? Is

there a floor peg that goes through one of the holes or do you hold it
with
your thumb? It seems like it would be pretty heavy; a giant soprano
clarinet(maybe the holes in the bell are to make up for the extra weight
of
a bigger horn:}.

So the whole instrument is straight? Is there a picture of one anywhere
online?
