It has a peg, but the holes are not to make it lighter. It is an
acoustical phenomenon that I neither understand nor want to. But the
purpose is to create a very dramatic sound character to the low notes.
Yes it is funny looking, but so were some of my girlfriends in my youth.
That is not a reason to reject them.
