I have to say that when I tried the Kooiman thumb rest, I hated it. It
completely unbalanced the clarinet (obvious that it would do that, when you
see the shape...), and I found that it made my hand hurt. (No such problems
with a regular thumb rest.)

I felt that I was having to expend lots of energy and effort to keep the
clarinet balanced and it was taking away from my performing ability.
And---relevant to what you're talking about, Audrey---I felt it was
*forcing* me to *grip* the clarinet, or at any rate to hold my hand very
stiffly.

I know others have had a good experience, but I'm afraid that having tried
it out over the period of a clarinet lesson, I took it back off and threw it
across the room!
