I think there are certain things expected from someone in a 'classical'
setting. I've always felt that extreme movements are completely
unnecessary. You can be moved heart and soul without having to move body.
I live in New Orleans and the local music scene here is filled with
characters. Especially stand-up bassists seem to have a thing about just
acting weird. But they are putting on a show. It's not necessarily 100%
about the music when you're playing for tips. IMHO, a classical musician
should be (at least slightly) conservative as they are depicting not just
music but the era from which it comes.

Subject: [kl] Stage movements, redux

Stage manerisms were discussed some time ago, but I saw an interesting clip
last night. It was Sabine Meyer playing the Strauss Romance in Eb for
clarinet & chamber orchestra, with the Munich Phil. Chamber Orch. She
sounded great, as usual, but her emoting easily got on the nerves. At
times, she would bend over so far that her bell was almost touching the
stage floor. While I realize this is an individual "thing", I wonder if
performers know that, to some people, it's distracting from their playing.
Opinions?
