Joze Kotar asks who the Japanese player I described
was; diplomacy leads me to avoid a direct naming, but
she later married a very prominent New York player.
She actually came 3rd I think. It was quite funny; the
competition officials had decided that her
over-the-top flair made her the perfect competition
poster child/winner and had already had her do a
recital out of town (during the competition!). But in
the finals, perhaps having heard that the gossip/buzz
circulating that she was an amazing technician but not
really musical (this was not my reaction) she played
the Weber 2 but in a very understated way from what I
remember. As Peter Hadcock says in his chapter about
auditions, don't try to second guess! A Spanish
player, Juan Enric Lluna who had been studying in
London (with Tony Pay?) won. He played Spohr 1, and
the orchestra didn't know it and we were all very
nervous for him after the shaky opening tutti; I mean
Spohr 1 from memory is a hard go of it even without
distractions behind you. But he was great. Nicholas
Cox, a super British player placed second.

-Thanks Annie for asking; I will be looking at C
clarinets over the next while. I have heard mixed
things about Noblet and Buffet E11's. I tried for a
Noblet that was on ebay but it got pulled by the
seller for undisclosed reasons. I've told Steve Fox
that I really want to go up to his neck of the woods
and try his work and his C in particular, but having
just bought a house a major instrument purchase is
tricky. But I sure won't turn up on stage with
anything that I can't make sound at a serious
professional level. Tried that with the 4 Eb's I went
through before the one I've been using professionally,
if you can't play in tune and with good sound and
response, don't venture out the door with a horn!

Thanks everyone,

=====
