Dear Klarinetters,
During the week of May 5, many of the 8th grade clarinetists from
the Jr. High, where I work as a sectional rehearsal person, will have to
play 6 full length scales, up-&-down, from the Foundations For Superior
Performance, pp. 44 & 45. The scales in concert pitch are Bb, F, Gb, E,
Db & A. I'm sure almost all of you know that is C, G, Ab, F#, Eb and B
for Bb clarinets. Most of these kids are 13 or 14. Their performance of
these scales is part of their "audition" to get into the nationally
famous Cheyenne Mtn. High School Symphonic Band. They will also to have
to play 2 short excerpts from Rose Etude #1 and 6 (of 32).
I was looking through my books for a nice triplet version of each
of these scales, and was so pleased with Gaston Hamelin's "Gammes et
Exercices" and also Eugene Gay's Clarinet Method. I have decided to
print-out Hamelin's triplet version of each scale on the audition, which
is a repititious version, where the "beat" lands on different notes of
the scale. Once they can play the straight 8th-note version of these
scales out of their "Foundations" band book, I think they will enjoy
either Hamelin and Gay's triplet versions of the scales. I am hoping
that it will give them even more confidence for the audition. I am
hoping they will enjoy the experience. After a long season of
preparation for solo & ensemble contest, and for preparing them for
Junior High Band Contest (They played "Longford Legends", which required
huge amounts of serious drill with the metronome on chromatic and
diatonic triplets in the music), I'll try not to get disappointed if
they don't groove on Hamelin & Gay.
I think I will try to find articles about Hamelin and Gay on our
Klarinet.org search. "Inquiring Minds Want To Know". ANNIE
