Re: [kl] Gran Partita or Gran Partitta

Had I spelled the word, without seeing it in print, I would spell Partitta
with two Ts, because it "sound that way," which I know is the last valid
excuse for doing it.

As far as President Bush pronouncing "nucular," I would suggest that most
areas of the country have peculiarities in the way they speak. Not peculiar
for them, of course, but peculiar to people from other areas. This could
account for jokes such as, all of the Rs dropped by people in Mass. migrate
to Texas. (And if one wanted peculiar speech of politicians, one would only
have to look at the collected babblings of a certain former Vice President.

However, there are variants, even in an area. Some years ago, in a case I
reported, the witness said he lived in "Lovl". One syllable. After several
requests at repeats, I finally motioned to the attorney that I didn't have a
clue what he was saying. The attorney said, "He lives in Lobelville."
Frankly, it seems that variants in pronunciation are becoming more common
than less.
