In the last several days I have taken up a novel practice, based on the
misadventure of the frozen barrel. No, actually it's a recovery of a
practice I was taught back in the 5th and 6th grades: when you're through
playing, disassemble the instrument, swab it out carefully, and put it back
in its case. That's what cases are supposed to be for. And take the reed
off the mouthpiece and put that in some kind of reed case or holder. It's
a pain in the neck to do all that break-down, but it's less aggravating in
the long run than letting the instrument sit around, wet and assembled, and
encountering stuck joints, trashed pads, or tarnished keys.
