Subj: [kl] masking tape - sticky residue on metal
Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2003 00:43:55 -0400

I got this one from an acquaintance who worked at a book store: If
anyone has trouble with masking tape's leaving sticky residue on metal
during a repair stint, you can try using lemon extract to remove it.
I'm sorry to say that I don't know how widely available this stuff is,
but here in Iceland, it is sold in grocery stores along with vanilla
extract and other flavorings used for baking. The combination of
alcohol and citric acid takes care of the sticky stuff quite handily.
Used sparingly, it shouldn't damage the metal. And the pleasant smell
is a bonus.

Caveat emptor: don't use it on unlikely places like the back of your
credit card! I received a new MC in the mail, and there was a sticker
on the back. I had to remove the sticker so sign and validate the
card, and I gave the resulting sticky spot the lemon-extract
treatment. Took the little signing-strip right off the card, I did!

Regards,

Anna
