<<<I have to admit that I haven't done any measuring. However, if a C
clarinet can be played with an ordinary B flat mouthpiece these days, it
seems reasonable to suppose that tha bore of such an intrument is
significantly wider than that of a C clarient made so that it played best
with a smaller mouthpiece and a narrower reed.>>>

I believe that this is incorrect historically, Roger.

Dan Leeson posted a couple of weeks ago as to why the early orchestral
clarinet player would tote instruments in Bb, A and C. Bill McColl, my
teacher at the University of Washington here in Seattle, had such a set of
7-keyed clarinets that he played - eye (or rather ear) opening to hear him
play them. The biggest difference between them and his modern clarinet
wasn't the tone itself, but how much it varied from note to note as
cross-fingerings etc. were used. Some tones were very close to the modern
tone color.

It's been a while since I handled them, but if memory serves me correctly
the bores of the 3 clarinets in the matched set were pretty much the same.
All of them took the same mouthpiece, too.
