I second the motion.

I would also like to add a few thoughts:

- Complaints about off-topic posts are not without merit, especially when
things start to get carried away. I agree, this isn't an internet chat
room. But at the same time, I see no harm in having a *little* fun. The
problem is that it can often be like eating potato chips: you can't have
just one! :-)

- While off-topic posts may be considered bad form, publicly taking the
poster to task is even worse behavior (my opinion). If you have an issue
with someone, for whatever reason, take it offline: reply to that person
privately and leave it off the list. Otherwise you become part of the
problem.

- If your post is off-topic, then add [OT] or Off Topic to the subject.
This makes it easier for people who aren't interested in such posts to
delete them before they even open them, or to filter them out automatically.

- If your post may be of interest only to the person you are responding to
(i.e. "Bill, I *completely* agree with you!") then consider responding to
the person privately. Otherwise, at least consider my point above.

- The ultimate answer to the issue of off-topic posts is a moderated list.
That is also a more painful solution, since it delays posts, involves more
work on the moderator's part, and is less fun in general. Those who feel
strongly enough that off-topic posts have no place on the list might
consider that option. Maybe make klarinet@-----.org a moderated list, or
have a "klarinet-mod@-----. Or something
like that.

My two cents.
