Klarinet Archive - Posting 000773.txt from 2003/04

I find the klarinet listserve to be extremely rewarding, including
clarinet-related, music-related, and completely off-topic postings. Some of
the most entertaining (i.e., the list of country songs recently posted) are
off topic. Some of the on-topic posts (should I buy a Buffet or a Leblanc)
are not very interesting.

I read the ones I want to, and click past the ones I don't.

One of the most interesting things to me is the diversity of the posting
community, who (almost all) hold one thing in common, while having widely
differing perspectives on many, many other things. I appreciate the age
diversity and the international difference of opinions. I think that I
learn more from those with whom I disagree than those who share my opinion.
In fact, I'm really more interested in those other opinions than my own (I
get to live with them every day). I'm glad we have a significant amount of
posting from younger players - it gives me a feeling of being connected (at
least a little) with the future. I really like the advice from the
professionals, both players, scholars, and technicians; I can't imagine that
any professionals who really wanted to address a diverse community like this
would be "driven off" by off-topic posts, even lots of them, though if they
were attacked or insulted, it might be different.

What is my desired outcome from THIS posting? Simply a request that my
fellow posters continue to post however they see fit from their point of
view, with the only constraint that they consider the community they are
communicating with before pressing <send>.

I will continue to read the posts I want to and delete the ones I don't.
