An oxymoron, based on your chiding attempt to moderate the content of
Rebecca's e-mail.

Once you begin instructing someone how to self-moderate, they aren't doing
that anymore, are they? What you really want is some standard, or absent
that, participants to self-moderate the way you do, a process that begins
and ends with you.

So the best way to approach this is to suggest a standard, and then have it
included in the welcoming e-mail automatically sent out when people
subscribe. "This is a listserve about the clarinet. Discussions of hamsters
are not encouraged, unless, of course, they play the clarinet. Or are
possibly used as a swab."

In fairness, you do raise a good point about what is appropriate on a
listserve such as this. And that's fine. I didn't consider Tony Pay's
scatological remarks about Americans a few months back to be an appropriate
rejoinder to some commentary going on at the time, but I have since learned
that the English, despite their charm, still resent losing America to Mel
Gibson. We had quite the set-to about that one.

But Rebecca's hamster e-mails are so innocuous that I wonder why they even
surfaced on your radar.
