Lori,

This is sad news indeed. I live in Houston, and the Houston Symphony is
teetering on the precipice of bankruptcy as we speak.

The musicians recently voted to strike due to a long and drawn out battle to
negotiate a new contract. Reality is setting in for them and it is not good.

Given the lack of financial support, it is getting harder and harder for
many orchestras to make it.

I hope this is not a trend, but am worried that it might be. That would mean
fewer and fewer orchestral jobs would be opening up and already there is a
glut of very talented musicians available.

I wonder whether this saddening trend is happening in other countries beside
the U.S.

sad news I just received from a bassoonist
friend in the San Antonio Symphony,
their board of directors voted on Tuesday to shut the orchestra down for the
rest of the season. That means
they will not work for the last 5 weeks of the season &
along with the 6 weeks they already gave up, it's a total
of 11 weeks of work lost.
The 2003-04 season is up in the air.

The situation makes me cringe.... >>
