Your reaction is, unfortunately, a predictable one to words like "'idiotic
things,' 'childish twaddle,' and 'inane banter'," but in the last analysis
it isn't a question of whether or not we "want to talk, eat, breathe, and
think about THE CLARINET all the time," or whether or not we "consider THE
CLARINET the most important thing in our lives." An occasional exchange of a
few off-topic messages hurts no one and usually elicits no complaints - from
Mark or anyone else. It irritates people when the off-topic exchange is
prolonged, postings are frequent and they only involve a very few people.
There are lots of other mailing lists catering to any topic you or I can
think of, and private email is always a possibility when you think the
preponderance of list members may not be interested in your conversation.
The purpose of Klarinet is to discuss the clarinet. It is for most of us
only one of many interests. We don't necessarily "want to talk, eat,
breathe, and think about THE CLARINET all the time", but that's what we
expect to be thinking about when we gather our Klarinet mail.
I'm not convinced that an angry comeback like "I hope, as you mature and you
gain a more worldly perspective, you will cut the less-intense people here a
bit more slack...and learn to be less insulting, too" contributes much that
is positive to any discussion. Many of us, Mark firmly included, will find
this remark offensive and entirely off-base. You don't know most (or perhaps
any) of us first-hand, and characterizing our levels of maturity and
"worldly perspective" in any way is gratuitous.
Your apparent anger is energy misplaced.
With all respect,
Karl Krelove
