Yes!

Clark Fobes gave some instructions for this a while back, and I'll try to
correctly paraphrase them, since I can't find the post on short notice,
if in fact I ever saved it.

With the barrel and socket dry, try to assemble them. When you feel the
"wood on wood" binding, stop, and disassemble. In good light you should
be able to see inside the socket where the two parts are binding - the
surface of the wood will look different in that spot (or spots). Sand
those areas (inside the socket) lightly and try the assembly again.
Repeat the process until the two parts go together without binding. Go
slowly and carefully, and have patience.
