Fred,

Sorry I didn't respond sooner.

I went to this, and actually got to sit next to Alan Alda (WOO
HOO!)

Stanley played well, didn't look his age, made clarinetists
groan over their lack of technique up to his...but...

A few squeaks slipped in now and then. I was impressed with the
way he disregarded them.

I have never been specifically fond of S.D. in the way he styles
a line, or in his tone color. I am AMAZED at his technique.
Unlike other people mentioned on the list, particularly Charles
Neidich, which I believe someone once referred to his double
tonguing on the (Bb) Rossini Variations as "it sounded like a
party trick" as opposed to something of a great feat. Stanley
ALWAYS makes it musical, regardless of how fast the notes go.
You are always appreciative of each note...even in the
Corrigliano (sp?) Concerto where the notes seem to be as fast as
a hummingbird's wings.

I think he IS very musical to this day, even though I would do
things differently in many cases. The music was VERY well
executed. He is incredible...period! And I am NOT even going
into the fact that he is 75, right? He is incredible for any
age, and every clarinetist should at least hear him once,
whether in an orchestra concert, a chamber concert, or solo.

BUT....I will never go to an all Weber concert again, of ANY
performer on ANY instrument. Probably will stay away from an all
(name your composer) from now on. After 30 minutes, I was
looking for a different genre of music to keep me going, and all
I got was more Weber. I could handle an all Mozart better than
an all Weber concert though. Weber all sounds the same to me
(although I like Weber...just not 1.5 hours of it.)

Blah blah blah...great concert, even though I had my complaints.
