Subj: [kl] Followup to the frozen barrel non-saga

I hate when things work out and you don't know why.

We had a cold snap last night. It was 85 at this time yesterday. Now it's
about 40. I got home awhile ago, prepared to try some of the remedies I'd
seen suggested--WD-40 or freezing the joint while it was wrapped in a
towel--and turned the barrel. It came right off. I greased the tenon
HEAVILY. Everything sounds as it should.

Now, however, I can feel what seems to be an unevenness in the barrel
itself, a point of resistance. I read about this on a website where some
repairman describes how he works on stuck barrels. At least I didn't have
to remove the trill keys the way he does.

Do composite barrels get around the expansion problem? The Accu-Bore
barrel looks uglier than sin but if it can avoid this kind of expansion, it
might be worth it. Then again, do makers produce 3rd party wooden barrels
for a mid-range Leblanc, or am I just dreaming?
