The size of the Mozartean orchestra is an issue that is discussed at
length in Zaslaw's book on the Mozart' symphonies.

Four first violins would be a general standard for a total of 12 strings
(4-3-2-2-1). Yet as a kid, I saw the NY Phil. under Bruno Walter do the
Jupiter symphony with a Mahler sized orchestra and presumed that that
was the standard.
