Hi Nancy and Bill
This sounds like both your students may be pinching the sound in the throat
(perhaps in an attempt to get a pure focussed sound?). Ask the student to
imagine someone holding the palm of their hand up against the bottom of the
bell. The student's job is to blow lots of air straight through the length of
the clarinet, blowing the person's hand off the bell. Hope this helps.
