There is a discussion of the duduk which can be accessed on the internet
very easily. One of my classmates of a decade ago, a reed (clarinet, oboe,
saxophone) player of Armenian decent was presented with a newly hand-made
duduk, by a master of the instrument, given lessons pro bono and was charged
with the responsibility to carry on the tradition. The instrument is
relatively short, has a very long, wide and thick double reed which has to
be soaked 'forever'. The range is very low and the sound, shall we say,
plaintive?
