Hmm, I wish I'd read that before I made my comment about traditions not
necessarily making rational sense. ;-)

Incidentally, the language part I have to deal with every day since I am
currently living in Switzerland right on the border between French- and
German-speaking parts, working with Italians, and one of my best friends is
a Rumantsch speaker! Which is a fascinating experience, because it becomes
clear that different languages tend to emphasise different concepts, and
something which requires many words to explain in English may require only
one in, e.g., Italian---the prime examples being many musical terms.
