Hello, Klarinet List.

I've been very busy for the last several weeks!
I had been nominated for the Arizona Governor's
Arts Awards, and a Pulitzer, for my "Fanfare for
the Fallen Heroes of the 9-11 Attack" (a 9-minute
Patriotic Double Fugue for String Orchestra).

This work, and its companion, "In Memoriam
for the Fallen Victims of the 9-11 Attack", (a 7
1/2 minute Patriotic Double Fugue for Solo
Horn and String Orchestra), comprise the ONLY
known time in ALL Music History, that TWO
Double Fugues were written to commemorate an
historic event, albeit a tragedy.

But both awards traditionally only go to famous
people, who have been nominated several times
before, so at least I got my first time at bat for
both awards. Unfortunately the Arizona website
only temporarily lists the non-winner nominees,
while the Pulitzer website never does; so I may
not be able to use either in a resum=E9.

nominees)=20

Pulitzer website=20
(It doesn't seem to ever list the many non-winning
nominees, regardless if they are famous.)

Meanwhile I have written a new Duo for Flute
and Bassoon, which has a lot of counterpoint in
it, is written with my usual Chromatic Modality,
and some Quartal, Harmony. I've even had the
time to transcribe it an Eb Soprano and Bb Bass
Clarinet. =20

"Duo for Flute and Bassoon"
(April 2003, 5 mvts., 12 1/2 min.)
(Transcribed to Eb Soprano and
Bb Bass Clarinets.)

I Canonic Invention: Moderato 1' 40"
II Aria: Adagio 2' 00"
III Scherzo - Romanza - Scherzo 3' 30"
IV Canon: Largo 2' 00"
V Rondo: Allegretto 3' 25"
total time: 12' 25"

The range of the Flute Part is from Concert
F (the bottom space on the Treble Clef), up to
the Concert G, 4 lines above. The Bassoon Part
rarely goes below the Concert G at the bottom
of the Bass Clef, and does hit the Low Concert
C once; while it rarely goes as high as the Con-
cert A in the second space of the Treble Clef.
(The Long-Bodied Model of Bb Bass Clarinet
will be required for the transcription.)

Having been told that the mere mention of
counterpoint causes a few members of this list
to panic, I would ask that if anyone is interested,
that they E-Mail me privately for more details.

(I guess I shouldn't mention that the climax of
the Beethoven Ninth Symphony is a glorious
Double Fugue. It is in the angelic Variation of the
Fourth Movement, where the Alti sing "Seid Um-
schlungen, Millionen!" against the Soprani singing
"Freude sch=F6ne G=F6tterfunken, Tochter aus Ely-
sium". . . . But I guess I shouldn't mention that
fact. . . . Plus there's also the giggling, happy
Double Fugue in the 4th Movement of the Mozart
41st, "Jupiter", Symphony, too. . . Naaaahhh! I
won't mention that either.)
