Subj: [kl] Fun & games with "barrel blank"
Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2003 00:35:13 -0400

Today I received my "barrel bank", whose bore I will be able to shape
and re-shape and re-shape again. Before I attempted to do anything
else with it, I put it on my Bb and fingered low E and blew....

I wondered, will it play anything at all? will it squeak? will it even
approximate a clarinet sound ? .......

Given that my barrel blank was a 'normal' Bb barrel, but now the bore
has been reamed out 4 mm (a bit more than 1/8" --- I even bought a set
of gauges so that I can keep records), and now the bore is a straight
cylinder with no taper of any sort, would anyone care to guess what
happened when I fingered low chalumeau notes and low clarion notes?

I have no experience in this sort of thing, but the result surprised me.

Cheers,
Bill
