Hi Wayne,
You'll be a big fish in a small pond.
Most of my contact musically in this area is with the activities at Antelope
Valley College. As one might expect here in County and Western Pickup
Truckville the number of clarinetists is small. With perhaps the exception
of a couple of college girls who play in the wind ensemble, the rest of the
relatively small number of reed players are saxophonists who double on
clarinet and flute. The college students read like maniacs. I'm barely
tolerated. Jim Peck, who also plays in the wind ensemble is an older
professional who misses NOTHING. He teaches, lives in Tehachapi, and plays
in the orchestra. He probably knows everyone worth knowing. Lee Matalon ,
who has been teaching reeds in the Antelope Valley forever, also knows
everybody. The musicians in his sax quartet double on whatever.
I have lived in Lancaster for nine years. Most of my playing aside from the
wind ensemble and the Bebop improv class is done in Sunday afternoon trad
jazz clubs down below.
I hope you enjoy WIND and snow.
Best
Al Nemiroff
