Ray and my sister were friendly competitors in All-County and All-State
Bands here back in the late seventies and early eighties. He and I played in
a couple of clarinet groups and in a community band in Chas., and I had him
as a student at a couple of summer music camps where I attended college, so
I guess I've known him since around 1975. I watched him grow as a young man
and as a musician, and he's a class act...and has the driest yet most
wonderful sense of humor you can find. He's an excellent teacher, and if
you'd have opportunity to meet and/or study with him, I'd recommend it
highly.

And in case you didn't know, the principal clarinet of the Chicago Symphony
also came out of the school system here...Larry Combs attended South
Charleston junior and high schools here in the Charleston area, so we've
given a couple of goo gifts to the clarinet world.

As for the area you're in and school music, WV in general is suffering the
same plight, but Logan and Mingo counties are among the list of hardest-hit.
Hang in there, keep up your study and playing, and overcome your
surroundings there.

WOW!!! That is really cool. When was he here in WV? Maybe WV isn't as bad as
I think it is. I think it is probably Logan that drives me mad. This is just
a bad place. Nobody cares about our band. Not even the people in it. The
community is a bad place for drugs and I have lost many friends to them. I
am very lucky that I have avoided the drugs. I don't smoke, but I can not
count on one hand the friends I have that do not smoke.
