By definition, none of them ever hears the _entire_ orchestra from the
audience's point of view. That is, when one of the principles is
listening from an audience seat, he/she isn't playing. Of course, no
instrument plays during every moment, but during the moments when every
instrument is playing, who judges the result from the audience point of
view?

Tonight's concert was excellent (Haydn, Carter, Beethoven --- Haydn was
my favorite, "La Chasse"), and therefore I'm not complaining or
criticizing. I'm just thinking out loud. Maybe they respect the
opinion of a production crew member in such situations?
