I neither know nor care what the others in the ensemble knew or heard.
That was never my motivation for playing on an A bass. I detected a
character difference and that is all that was needed. Of course, if a
conductor said that he did not like the sound of the instrument, then
everything would have been negotiable. And it does even matter to me if
conductor can hear a difference of sound character, only that he be
pleased with my performance.
