Hello Annie,

The flute folks are really into Irish/Celtic music so I am now carrying a
flute book that was recommended on one of the flute lists:

The Irish Flute by Roger Holtmann. Mel Bay Publications, Inc. SS. 63 + 32
pages. Fifty-five delightful flute solos with easy piano accompaniment.
Each arrangement includes chords for guitar. In the beginning of the
accompaniment book there are examples of guitar strum patterns for the
various types of Irish tunes in both pick style and finger style. Titles
include: A Visit to Ireland; Ballahaboy Fair; Bridget McBride; Captain
O'Neill; Comely Jane Downing; Crossing the Stream; Fare You Well; For
Ireland I'd Not Tell Her Name; Garryowen; Green garters; Kelly the Rake;
Kiss Your Partner; Kitty of Coleraine; Larry O'Gaff; Mary's Return; Miss
Johnson; My Love is Fair and Handsome; Nora O'Neill; O'Donnell Aboo; Shule
Aroon; Tady's Wattle; and many more. $9.95.

The very first piece in the book is The Rakes of Mallow, which is familiar
from some composers Folk Song Suite. A few of these pieces are a bit high
to be really comfortable on the clarinet. The Rakes of Mallow goes up to
an altissimo G for example. It could easily be transposed to written C and
then the highest note would be the C above the staff. There are other
piece that don't go higher than an A or B above the staff.

For an 11 year who has a good command of the clarion register, there are
probably some pieces she could play right away and others that could be
worked on over the next several years. Anyway it isn't much of a gamble at
$9.95.
