Subj: [kl] Help in finding good Celtic music for Katie
Date: Tue, 1 Apr 2003 23:30:36 -0500

I have a wonderful 11-year-old clarinet student who also performs
regularly with an Irish dance group. I went to see one of Katie's many
performances on St. Patrick's Day and enjoyed the Celtic music that the
dancers performed with. It reminded me of the music from "River Dance".
Even though clarinet is not a traditional Celtic instrument, I thought
that Katie would love to learn some Irish and Celtic tunes, so I ordered
her a book from EBLE MUSIC, "Favourite Celtic Melodies" for clarinet by
Sara Watts. It was the only "Celtic" type book that EBLE had. The book
was a terrible disappointment, a very small and way-too-easy book of
tunes like "All Through the NIght", "The Ash Grove" and "Auld Lang
Syne". I had been hoping for something more like Percy Grainger
compositions or even some of the melodies I am familiar with in "Folk
Song Suite" and the Holst Military Suites. I came across a 1st clarinet
part to "Themes from 'Green Bushes' " arr. by Percy Grainger over at the
high school where I teach clarinet lessons, and I thought it was
beautiful.
Katie is a very talented Irish dancer and clarinetist, and I would
like for her to be able to learn some clarinet music in the Celtic
style. Will I have to listen to CD's and transcribe them note for note?
Thanks. ANNIE
