Congratulations! I hope you get your wish that she will want to play the
clarinet like her father, but if Mariana does want to play the viola, and
if she learns to play the viola well, and if she avoids hurting herself
holding up that big instrument, then she will grow up to be one of the most
popular musicians in town. Despite all the viola jokes, the violists have
the last laugh. They're the ones who can get away with acting like divas
if they want to, because a good, healthy violist never lacks invitations to
play chamber music.

My husband, an active (possibly obsessional) amateur violin player, seems
to be forever in search of a violist with an uninjured left shoulder. The
other string players we know say the same thing. They ruthlessly compete
over the violists. When a skilled violist gets "viola neck" or "viola
shoulder" and has to quit or take a break from playing, the rest of the
quartet spies around and plots to lure away a violist from some other
quartet. Then they worry about how many other groups *their* violist plays
with--will the shoulder hold up? But, if a clarinet player gets "clarinet
thumb," nobody gives a squeak.
